Hello Everyone;

I wanted to touch base with a few important issues before we begin our much anticipated Spring Break.

There were a number of emails to me regarding the new amended proposed calendar for the 2023 / 2024 school year.  A few things to note:

Firstly, the proposed changes to next year’s calendar…

  • The reason this change may happen is because there was an oversight by SD67 and our winter vacation break did not line up with our neighbouring districts.  To have them aligned is preferable and so the district has put these changes forward.
  • On the current calendar winter break is Monday December 18 to January 1 – a total of 11 working days – 3 of these days are stats so CUPE would not be paid for 8 days
  • With the proposed calendar, winter break is Friday December 22 to January 5 a total of 11 working days 3 of these days are stats so CUPE would not be paid for 8 days also.
  • It turns out there was an error on the original calendar around Spring Break, and it will be corrected to read:

 Good Friday – school closed Friday March 29, 2024

                  Easter Monday – schools closed Monday April 1, 2024

  • This change would not affect the number of unpaid days that CUPE would have over winter break and if they are eligible for the STATS they would still get all 3.  The same number of instructional days still exists in the new calendar.
  • These are not my own interpretations of the changes, I went to the employer with our questions.
  • If you feel strongly either way about these changes, please go to the SD67 website and fill out the survey.

Next, a tentative retirment seminar is currently being planned by our union.  It will be a two day seminar (both days paid) and will be facilitated by a knowledgeable consultant from CUPE BC.  We are right now aiming for Monday, May 15, and Tuesday, May 16th.  Again, these dates are tentative at this time.  Because of covid, it has been 3 years since this education has been held and we are excited to have it returning in person for our members.  Please note, if you have previously contacted me or someone else to be put on the “list” for this seminar, please reach out again.  We really want to ensure that no one is being missed.  As soon as the dates are confirmed, I will be sending out a registration form with further details.

Please save the date for a SD67 Unit Meeting which will be held on Saturday, April 15th in one of the Penticton Community Center meeting rooms.  The meeting will last for no more than 2 hours, and will have many items on the agenda, including the hiring of Responsible Adults in the district, an update of the ongoing budget process, unsafe work, use of personal cell phones at your job (spoiler, you should NOT be using them) as well as grievances that are currently on the books with our employer.

A reminder to all ISW’s in the district of our very important meeting to be held on Thursday, April 6th in the IMC building at 3:30 pm. If you have not already let me know you are coming, please do so asap.

Finally, a reminder to all custodial staff of a couple things:

  • If you are performing the work of a CIC at your job, you need to be paid accordingly. If you are subbing for a CIC, you need to be paid as well.  If your paycheque does not reflect the extra pay, please contact me.
  • During the last round of bargaining, we successfully won the right for our custodians to be paid extra for performing the task of picking up dirty needles.  There is a form that you need to keep track on, which I have a copy of and will distribute. I have asked the district to make this form available to all on the local computer drives.  Please, this was something important that was bargained hard for and we need you to be taking advantage of this extra pay if you are performing this work.

I wish everyone a restful and safe Spring Break!  Please reach out to me with any concerns you may have at this time.

Sincerely;

Terri Phillips

Hello All;

I am so happy to relay that our CA has been ratified and has passed with an overwhelming 97% YES vote.

I am attaching (below) a document with main points from the new agreement, as well as copies of the wage grid as they reflect the Provincial Framework Agreement pay increases.

Finally, our employer has let me know that all retro pay will be deposited into your account, along with your paycheque on December 23, 2022.  Excellent news!

If there are questions regarding the CA (or anything else) please do not hesitate to contact me. Please know though, that you may not hear back from me until after the Christmas break.

I wish everyone a very happy and restful holiday.

December 11

Good Morning;

My sincere apologies. After sending out the details on the new agreement I was getting some emails and texts from people saying they could not see their jobs listed.  I realized that the copies from the original PowerPoint had been cut off at the bottom, and so indeed, some jobs were missing!  I assure you, everyone’s job still exists and everyone will be getting the provincial wage increases, as indicated on the grids.

Thank you to all for kind words, patience, and encouragement as we went through this enormous process.  If there are any other questions or you notice something else missing, please let me know.

Sincerely;
